For those looking for the long plunge into the alchemy of a first-class fictive imagination rather than a carefully architected novel-as-thought-experiment, 10:04 will not be the one to get them there.

In other writers' hands — like Sebald, or Teju Cole — the ideas blossom and grow weighty. In the end, "10:04" struggles to find that balance; instead, we are left with a very artful construction of Lerner himself.

To the extent that 10:04 is “about” anything, it is about the tensions between, and possibilities of, these different worlds and different futures.
