I find Hustvedt’s The Blazing World to be a reminder of our contemporary situation—our society’s still-early strainings against the binary—which contextualises our science fiction, which is not as far from Sheldon’s time as we’d like.

Siri Hustvedt’s dizzying, deeply felt The Blazing World—political, philosophical, transcendent in the way of true art—will stay alive in readers’ minds for years to come.

Despite its intensity, "The Blazing World" concerns ambivalence: that of both genders toward patriarchy; the lure of fame, and the art world's infatuation with appearances; the undermining power of unconscious motivation.
