It’s like finding an obsessive cinematic auteur directing a gross-out movie: Andrei Tarkovsky’s lost prequel to The Hangover.

Though the prose is exhilarating and punchy, we’ve seen this story of the privileged white boy stumbling toward maturity too many times.

The book is funny and pleasantly loose, though not always a success. The scenes with the extended Levin family don’t quite land, nor does a brief foray into Hollywood satire. But who really cares? The writing is always worthy of your time.
