Will Vargas Llosa return to form? One day, maybe. But for now, though it has pressed some old characters into new service, The Discreet Hero does not mark a comeback for its writer.

The characters may feel that civilisation – real civilisation – is always threatened by malice, but the warmth and energy of the novel, and the genial presence of its author, negate the bleakness of this moral.

Readers will enjoy coming to their own conclusion, likely recognizing that for all the plot’s noisy tumult, the book’s keenest pleasures — its descriptions of a cool glass of water on a hot day, of late-age married love, of the price, and finally, reward of lifelong loyalty — are its quietest ones.
