To Karr’s credit, in “The Art of Memoir” she reserves her greatest enthusiasm for work that recognizes just how slippery and elusive our own stories are.

Karr’s collection might offer something of the same to a writer who is a fan of her work.

“The Art of Memoir” also warns the prospective memoirist about the single person with whom you will have the most trouble: yourself.
